Enabling the staff with the best
Excel Refrigeration are an exceptional example of a progressive field service business. They're always looking to new technology’s, methodologies and they have a great attitude toward enabling autonomy for their staff.
Before Excel, Stephen had been country manager for another company in the industry. He gained the experience, knowledge and confidence to go out on his own. He did well. He founded Excel Refrigeration eleven years ago and has now grown the business to 95 staff across eleven branches alongside owner/director, Craig Heerdegen.
Donna Hoyle began as an administrator and has worked her way to Group Manager. Now overseeing staff, finances and operations across the group of eleven branches.
A robust implementation
In 2014 however, Donna stepped out of her normal duties at Excel to take on the responsibility of integrating simPRO across the group. This is the kind of example we love to see. Excel dedicated a high-level member of staff for a whole year to ensuring a successful launch pad with the software - the value of such focus on proper integration of the software is proven in their success.

These guys really do look after their staff. In fact it seemed to be a common theme in the New Zealand trade service offices. Each of the staff at the Hawera office had a sit-stand desk which is becoming popular and a near-essential health and safety item for office workers.
If any team member needs equipment, no matter where they are they can simply login to the internal portal and help themselves to whatever equipment they need. Staff put in their order from any remote location, for any item to be shipped to any location.Stephen has not yet seen an instance of the system being abused.
Work Life balance
The utilisation of technology has enabled supervisors to achieve a better work/life balance. Again, another theme that runs through the veins of the New Zealand way of life. With simPRO Connect, comprehensive detail can be uploaded directly to the job taking a considerable amount of unnecessary work from the supervisors so they're not staying back at the end of the day compiling job notes.
Admin staff are now able to take leave more readily. The processes are in place and the information is readily available for their colleagues to step in and keep the ball rolling.
And the big change?
Cashflow, being able to invoice the same day rather than wait until the following week for the paperwork to be brought back to the office.
