Redundant employee becomes entrepreneur

The thought of being made redundant probably doesn’t bring a smile to your face. But, for Jeff Phillips, losing his job 25 years ago is what drove the success he enjoys today.

After being made redundant, Jeff decided it was time he try something he’d been considering, but hadn’t yet had the chance to try out. He wanted to start his own electrical business – and losing his job granted him the opportunity to make it happen.

Five years later, Phillips Electrical was born in Wanganui, New Zealand. As Managing Director, Jeff leads a strong and highly qualified team of 15. Now a leading electrical installation and maintenance company in the country, Phillips Electrical is thriving.

And Jeff is certainly smiling.

Harmony in the workplace

Harmony in the workplace is something Jeff considers as essential to keeping the business running smoothly. It means when a staff member is off sick or needs to attend to family matters, there’s always someone to chip in and help.

simPRO has helped Jeff and his team streamline the workflow by tracking and tracing everything.

“We can start a quote, turn it into a project, enable retentions, then go back three months later and bill the retentions out. It’s a total package.” Jeff Phillips

On the go

Whether he’s travelling to a rugby game, away on business or sitting at the airport, Jeff is able to keep a close eye on the business with simPRO on his iPad or laptop.

In the following video, Jeff tells us how he got into business in the first place and how simPRO has pulled his operations into one integrated workflow.

We’d like to thank Jeff and the team at Phillips Electrical for their time and hospitality.
